Why it matters who you choose to handle your property

Most buyers, sellers and owners won’t know every requirement involved in a transaction, and shouldn’t have to. That’s why a REIWA member matters.

When you choose a real estate agent, you’re trusting them with more than a property.

You’re relying on them to understand the rules, use the right documents, keep up with legislative changes and know what to do when something doesn’t go to plan.

Most buyers, sellers and property owners won’t know every requirement involved in a property transaction, and they shouldn’t have to.

That’s why working with a REIWA member matters.

REIWA members have access to specialist training, current industry guidance, WA-specific forms, market data and professional support designed to help them manage those responsibilities properly and give you greater confidence in the process.

Keeping up with change

Real estate is a regulated profession in WA, and the requirements agents need to understand continue to evolve.

Recent years have brought major residential tenancy reforms, while new Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing requirements began applying to parts of the real estate profession from 1 July 2026.

Depending on the services they provide, businesses may now need to complete customer due diligence, keep records, manage money laundering risks and report suspicious activity.

REIWA helps members keep across changes like these through industry updates, practical guidance, specialist advice and REIWA Training.

WA real estate professionals must also complete Continuing Professional Development each year, including training in legal requirements, ethics or professional responsibility and professional skills.

As a consumer, this means the person handling your property has access to current information and training as the rules change.

The right tools behind the transaction

Property transactions can involve a lot of paperwork, and the details matter.

REIWA members have access to a suite of forms and contracts developed specifically for the WA property market and regularly reviewed as legislation and industry practice change.

They also have access to REIWA property data and market insights to support conversations around pricing, market conditions and recent activity.

You may not see these tools being used, but they form part of the professional framework behind the advice and service you receive.

Membership is a choice

Real estate professionals must meet the legal requirements that apply to their role whether they’re a REIWA member or not.

REIWA membership is voluntary.

By joining the Institute, members choose to connect themselves with WA’s peak body for real estate and the professional standards, training, resources and support that come with it.

That doesn’t mean every transaction will be simple or that problems will never arise.

It means the person you’re working with has chosen to invest in their professional knowledge and has access to the tools and support to help them navigate a complex industry.

For something as important as property, that matters.
