With residential blocks in the suburbs getting smaller, more remote, and more expensive, it’s no wonder more people are choosing apartment living in central locations like the city. But what does the move mean for Fido?

Thankfully, cities like Perth are embracing their canine (and feline) residents so a move to the city can actually improve the lives of our four-legged friends.

Stats in the City

More than 700 dogs and 382 cats already call the city home.

While rules, particularly around dog ownership, vary from apartment complex to apartment complex, the ancient idea that dogs don’t belong in apartments has shifted dramatically.

Entertaining canines in the city

Thankfully, the city has an abundance of green spaces to keep your dog entertained. But here are some of our favourites…

The city is home to one of the best, and most scenic, dog parks in Perth. The Ozone Reserve Dog Agility Park is a fenced dog park featuring jump bars, weave poles, a pyramid ramp, dog walk and dog resting podium.

The park welcomes dogs of all sizes, and features essentials such as park benches, a water fountain and a bin with a dog waste bag dispenser.

The redeveloped Wellington Square in East Perth is also home to a wonderful off-lead area.

Then, of course, there’s the seemingly endless green space that is Langley Park. If your dog still has energy left to burn after running the length of Langley Park with you then we’re very impressed.

I’ll have a pupaccino, thanks

Dogs aren’t only being welcomed into our apartments, they’re increasingly being welcomed along to our brunch and pub dates.

In Northbridge alone, Picabar, Ezra Pound and Henry Summer all welcome dogs, so you can enjoy a pint with your pooch.

In East Perth you can even eat a hot dog with your dog at Wassup Cafe, if that tickles your fancy.

The City of Perth is also working with restaurants, bars and cafes to increase the number of alfresco options on offer which, in turn, increases the options for brunch dates with your furry pal.

Best breeds for apartment living

Own a bigger dog? Don’t necessarily let that put you off apartment living.

Some of the bigger breeds in the canine world are actually better for apartment life, according to the RSPCA.

It says some bigger breeds are known as “mat dogs,” due to the inordinate amount of time they spend sleeping and lying during the day.

While they still need exercise, bigger dogs breeds like the Great Dane, Pyrenees , Mastiffs, Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards love to nap all day, especially while their owners are out of the house, making them more suitable for both apartment owners and their neighbours.
