"This guide will take you through the steps to start your real estate career in Western Australia with your best foot forward. "

Are you thinking about a career in real estate but not sure where to start? If you’re fascinated by property market trends, love meeting new people and helping them achieve their goals, a career in real estate could be the perfect fit for you.

This guide will take you through the steps to start your real estate career in Western Australia with your best foot forward.

Step One: Complete your education requirements

The first step is to complete the required real estate course. REIWA Training offers Unrestricted Registration (covering both Property Manager course and Sales) as well as Restricted Registration if you prefer to focus on either Property Management or Sales, not both. Choose the real estate course that suits you:

  • Unrestricted Registration: The best of both worlds – work in both Sales and Property Management. This is also the pathway to getting your real estate licence so you could one day operate as an independent agent or open your own agency.
  • Restricted Sales Registration: Ideal for those looking for a career as a Sales representative.
  • Restricted Property Management: Dedicated to those who wish to manage rental properties.

Step Two: Register with DMIRS

Upon completing your chosen course, you have up to three years to register with the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS – more commonly known as Consumer Protection), the WA real estate industry regulator. Real estate professionals must be registered with DMIRS to practise real estate in WA.

Step Three: Gain valuable experience

You’ve completed your training and registered with DMIRS, now it’s time to immerse yourself in the world of real estate. Find an agency or a licensed agent that aligns with your values and who you believe you can learn the most from. You’re now able to pursue your passion for property and help clients find their new home, office space, rural or industry property, or even a small business – the options are endless and the work varied!

If you’re planning to work for yourself or become an agency licensee, you will need two years of experience under your belt and to have completed the CPP51119 Diploma of Property (Agency Management).
