REIWA’s 2024 Sleeping Bag Appeal, making a real difference to people’s lives

25 July 2024

"REIWA’s 2024 Sleeping Bag Appeal collected over 790 items, including sleeping, bags, blankets and winter woolies."

REIWA’s 2024 Sleeping Bag Appeal collected over 790 items, including sleeping, bags, blankets and winter woolies, more than three times the amount collected by the previous appeal.

REIWA CEO Cath Hart said the Appeal aimed to provide much-needed warmth and comfort to those experiencing homelessness and rough sleeping across Western Australia.

“The Sleeping Bag Appeal is one of the ways REIWA members help those in need and support the incredible work of The Salvation Army, with the donations providing dignity and support to vulnerable individuals,” Ms Hart said.

“We had a fantastic response to this year’s Appeal and I would like to thank the 28 REIWA member agencies that took part, the team at REIWA House, and the broader community that made donations.

“Their support and generosity will make a real difference in the lives of those doing it tough this Winter.”

Salvation Army WA Public Relations Secretary Warren Palmer said the gift of a sleeping bag or blanket would make a huge difference to someone’s life.

“Sleeping bags in particular provide multiple functions, acting as blankets, beds, pillows, places for meals, and temporary shelters,” he said.

“Each day more than 10 people sleeping rough attended the Salvos’ Doorways service seeking a sleeping bag, with that number doubling in Winter.

“We thank REIWA, their members and the public for their support. Not only do the items collected by the Sleeping Bag Appeal ensure that these people have access to essential warmth and a safer night’s sleep, the initiative significantly impacts the community by fostering empathy and solidarity.”

If you wish to help those in need you can donate directly to the Salvos’ Red Shield Appeal.
