FAIRYTALES DO COME TRUE IN DENMARK

Some homes begin their story with a front door. For us, Stonehaus began with a winding garden
path, ancient granite boulders and a glimpse of stone and timber through the trees.
From the moment we saw it, we felt we had discovered somewhere magical. Towering karri, jarrah
and tingle trees stood like quiet guardians around a home that seemed to belong as much to the
forest as to the people living within it. Before we stepped inside, our hearts had already whispered,
“This is home.”

Life here has given us a collection of small, treasured moments. Sitting on the patio, we watch blue
wrens flit through the gardens like tiny flashes of sapphire. Finches, wattlebirds and red-breasted
parrots arrive and depart, each playing a part in the daily story unfolding around us.
With every season, the setting changes. Flowers appear beside meandering paths, sunlight finds a
different corner of the garden, and the great granite boulders hold their place among the trees.
There is always something to discover, even along a path we have walked a hundred times.
Inside, Stonehaus has a magic of its own. Rich timber, beautiful stonework, and soaring cathedral
ceilings give the rooms warmth and character. Through the expansive windows, the forest feels
close enough to touch. The round window, timber staircase and lovely, unexpected details make this
a home that rewards curiosity.

We will miss the jarrah kitchen, the quiet upstairs reading nook, and the pleasure of working at a
desk overlooking the trees. From the upper bedroom balconies, the gardens reveal themselves from
another angle, with branches, birds and shifting light bringing movement to the view.
Then there are the moments when the world beyond Stonehaus seems wonderfully far away: a soak
in the outdoor bath beneath the treetops, the comforting warmth of the sauna, or a glass of wine as
evening settles softly over the garden. As daylight fades and the windows begin to glow, the house
looks every bit the woodland retreat that first captured our hearts.

For all its beauty, what we love most is how Stonehaus makes us feel. It has encouraged us to slow
down, notice the birds, follow the sunlight, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being home.
Leaving this chapter will be difficult. But we like to imagine someone else following that garden
path for the first time, looking up through the trees and feeling the same quiet certainty we did.

Denmark overview

The townsite of Denmark, located on the south coast 51 kilometres west of Albany, was gazetted a townsite in 1909. It is located on the Denmark River from which it derives its name, the river having been named by the explorer Dr J B Wilson RN in December 1829. Wilson named it the "Denmark" in compliment to his friend Dr. Alexander Denmark R.N. a physician to the fleet. The Aboriginal name "Koorrabup", recorded by Alfred Hillman in 1833, also refers to this area.

Although a townsite was not declared here until 1909, a settlement of this name had existed here for some years previous. A Millars Bros. Timber mill was established on the banks of the river in 1894.
