Hillside Retreat – A Storybook Home Among The Karri Trees

Perched high on a generous 1217 m² block, nestled within the towering Karri trees, this enchanting 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom retreat is more than a home — it's a timber-crafted sanctuary with soul. Built in 1998 by Totem Pole Homes, every detail was designed with reverence, beam by beam, in harmony with the natural beauty surrounding it.
Step inside, and the craftsmanship speaks in hushed tones. The jarrah ceilings soar in the main living area like the forest canopy above, casting a gentle hush across the room. Iron balustrades on the mezzanine twist and curl like wild vines adding a poetic rhythm to the space.
Downstairs, light filters gently through tall windows into two serene bedrooms. Wake to birdsong and end the day with a soak in the spa bath, tucked away like a secret promise of peace after your adventures on the Bibbulmun Track or afternoons spent by the calm waters of Wilson Inlet.
Mornings here are slow and golden. From the expansive front windows, watch local Ring Neck Parrots greet the day with bold curiosity. If you have an apple slice to share, they might even perch beside you on the timber deck, as the forest whispers hello.
In the heart of the home, the Karri wood kitchen is as much for storytelling as it is for cooking. Under soft golden light, the swirling grains of timber carry the history of the land — each knot a memory, each groove a tale. You may find yourself lingering at the sink, watching the forest beyond, as time gently slips by.
Upstairs, the open-plan mezzanine is a celebration of space and light. Currently a combined bedroom and living area, it could become a writer’s loft, a painter’s haven, or simply a space for dreaming. Though there’s no second bathroom — not yet — what it lacks in plumbing, it makes up for in potential. Step out onto the intimate upper deck, eye-level with cockatoos, and feel the world soften around you.
Creature comforts include two reverse-cycle air conditioners, a dishwasher, and a charming wood-fired stove to warm the cooler forest nights and a spa bath.
Outdoors, the large front deck offers ample space for entertaining, while the upstairs retreat invites quiet moments under the stars. A single carport and additional parking make room for guests or gear.

Don’t miss your chance to own this one-of-a-kind woodland escape — a place where the lines between home and haven beautifully blur.

Denmark overview

The townsite of Denmark, located on the south coast 51 kilometres west of Albany, was gazetted a townsite in 1909. It is located on the Denmark River from which it derives its name, the river having been named by the explorer Dr J B Wilson RN in December 1829. Wilson named it the "Denmark" in compliment to his friend Dr. Alexander Denmark R.N. a physician to the fleet. The Aboriginal name "Koorrabup", recorded by Alfred Hillman in 1833, also refers to this area.

Although a townsite was not declared here until 1909, a settlement of this name had existed here for some years previous. A Millars Bros. Timber mill was established on the banks of the river in 1894.
