"THE BIG HOUSE" A RARE PIECE OF RAVENSTHORPE HISTORY

Some properties are simply homes. Others become part of a town's story.

Known as "The Big House", 97 Carlisle Street is one of Ravensthorpe's most distinctive historic residences, dating from the early 1900s and carrying a remarkable connection to the district's mining heritage.

Constructed from 1905, the residence was imported from Germany and built by Bewick Moreing & Co for the managers of Ravensthorpe's No. 2 Smelter. During its early years, the home was occupied by a succession of prominent mine managers during an important period in the development of the Ravensthorpe district.

More than a century later, the character and presence of this grand residence remain unmistakable.

Stepping inside, you'll find the craftsmanship and grandeur synonymous with its era, including high pressed-metal ceilings, ornate stained-glass windows, open fireplaces and folding doors, complemented by wide verandahs that wrap the home in classic country charm.

The home has five bedrooms and one bathroom, providing plenty of space for a family, those looking for a substantial country residence, or a buyer seeking a property with genuine character and history.

Outside, the property continues to impress.

A cobblestone driveway provides a memorable approach to the home, while the expansive grounds offer an abundance of space and possibilities. A large steel-frame shed provides valuable storage and workspace, complemented by a water tank and the generous landholding of approximately 1.8Ha or 4.44acres.

Properties of this scale, character and historical significance rarely become available.

97 Carlisle Street is more than a home; it is an opportunity to become the next custodian of an important piece of Ravensthorpe history.

This home is truly special, and there's much more to discover. Make an appointment to view for yourself and explore the character, charm, and potential this property offers.

Ravensthorpe overview

The townsite of Ravensthorpe is located in the south coastal region, 541 kilometres east southeast of Perth and 50 kilometres north northwest of the coastal town of Hopetoun. The Ravensthorpe region was first settled by the Dunn brothers in the 1860's, and it was James Dunn who first found gold in the area in 1899. Gold mining in the area was not very productive until a new find in 1900 resulted in rapid growth.

Ravensthorpe was gazetted a townsite in January 1901, the name having been suggested by surveyor A.W. Canning after the nearby Ravensthorpe Range. The Ravensthorpe Range was named by Surveyor General J.S. Roe in 1848 in honour of Bishop Augustus Short who, prior to becoming Bishop of WA & SA in 1847, had been the Vicar of Ravensthorpe in Northamptonshire (England) from June 1835. Bishop Short is also commemorated by Mt Short, a hill in the Ravensthorpe Range.
