This suburb takes its name from Mahogany Creek, a picturesque tributary of Jane Brook which flows through the area. The creek was known by this name as early as 1830, and takes its name from the towering forest through which it flowed (mahogany was the early colonial name for Jarrah). This place is well known from "The Old Mahogany Inn" located here, an early colonial wayside inn, formerly known as the "Prince of Wales" Inn.
