Magical Hideaway with Room to Grow and Create

Many of us crave to connect more deeply with our environment, and here is an opportunity to truly be at one with nature - two strawbale dwellings, native bushland, winter creek and soak all combine to create a natural haven 13 kilometres by bike to the Margaret River township.

The welcoming main homestead, a fantastically rambling straw-bale, mudbrick and native timber residence, consists of 6 large bedrooms with various living areas and 3 bathrooms. 100m away is a separate cottage (with Shire Short Stay Approval), that is also of straw-bale construction, with 2 bedrooms, bathroom, open plan living, multi-purpose room (used as artist studio) and storeroom. Incredible insulative qualities are gained by the straw bales, and both dwellings face north for additional solar benefits.

The homes nestle perfectly into a unique landscape that has significant water passing through in winter and spring, a soak, 8 hectares of National Trust Conservation, and great soils for growing intensive food crops. This special environment supports a host of wildlife including endemic mammal species and a myriad of birds.

You will feel your creative juices come alive in this inspiringly beautiful and quirky property. When the wind blows from the west you can hear the crashing of the surf on Redgate Beach just over the ridge, and days are filled with birdsong. Located 15kms from Margaret River, and perfectly located close to everything the area is world-renowned for, you can readily create your dream life here.

Margaret River overview

The townsite of Margaret River is located in the south west agricultural area, 277 kilometres south southwest of Perth and 48 kilometres south southwest of Busselton. It is located on the Margaret River from which it derives its name. The precise origin of the naming of the river is not known, but it was possibly named by John Bussell in honour of Margaret Wyche, a friend in England who was expected to follow the Bussell's to Australia. The name is first shown on a map of the region published in 1839.

In 1910 the Margaret River Progress Association wrote to the Minister for Lands requesting a townsite be declared at "the Upper Margaret Bridge". The reason given was that "the district is likely to be dotted with public buildings several miles apart in the near future if a townsite is not made available shortly". The District Surveyor who inspected the area preferred an area near the lower bridge on Caves Road, but this land was not available. Lots were surveyed in 1912, and the Townsite of Margaret River gazetted in 1913. In 1918 the name of the townsite was changed to "Margaret", but it was changed back to Margaret River in 1927, due to local usage of the name always being Margaret River.
