In January 1830 land at Woodman Point was set aside for a townsite to accommodate new settlers. the town was named Clarence and a large lake near its centre, "Lake Munster" (now Lake Coogee). In later years this name was applied more to the area north-west of the lake, while the rest of the area became known for postal purposes as "Woodman Point" and "South Coogee in the 1950s. Munster was officially adopted as a suburb name in 1954.
In 2019, the City of Cockburn approved a carve-up of Munster, whereby the north-western part of the suburb would become the new suburb of Lake Coogee while another part, in the south-west, would be added to the suburb of Henderson. Only the eastern part of Munster would remain part of the existing suburb.
Not only is Munster located just 10 minutes from Cockburn Central Shopping Centre and Cockburn train station, however is also a short drive away from Coogee beach, providing residents with everything they need in the one spot. The suburb is home to St Jerome's Primary School and is also within close proximity to various other schools in the area. Other features include Santich Park and South Coogee Reserve.
