The decked front porch of this stylish home leads to a formal entry with jarrah floorboards. The primary and second bedrooms sit at the front of the floorplan and offer large, inviting spaces with high ceilings, a split air-conditioning unit, a ceiling fan and an east-facing window framing each morning’s sunrise. Newly laid carpet sits on top of the original jarrah floorboards, and mirror-fronted robes provide good storage space in the second bedroom.

In the kitchen, the original hearth and high mantle contrast with the modern, minimalist vibe of cream cabinets, an appliance nook, stone-look benchtops and a 900 mm oven with a 5-burner gas hob introduced as part of the renovation.

The original back porch set off the kitchen has been built-in to create a spacious meal area with a pair of glass doors leading to a sheltered outdoor entertaining area overlooking the backyard. The family bathroom, laundry and a separate WC sit at one end of the meal area, and a multi-use space, currently styled as a home office, sits at the other. Carpeted, air-conditioned and fitted with a ceiling fan, this light-filled split-level room can be styled as a third bedroom with a sitting room, a nursery with a playroom or a plush studio space.

Central to the cottage layout is a cosy carpeted lounge room with a large casement doorway to the meals area, a ceiling fan and room for a large screen TV. Winter nights hunkered down in this cocoon-like space will feel like a treat.

The large, level backyard offers a blank slate with ample space for a productive garden, a chicken coop and a workshop. A corrugated iron shed sits at one boundary, while a driveway allows for vehicle access along the other.

Wundowie overview

The townsite of Wundowie is located in the Darling Range 72 kilometres east northeast of Perth and 31 kilometres west southwest of Northam. It is located adjacent to the original railway track from Perth to Northam, and in 1907 the Railways Department applied for a name for a newly constructed siding at the 53 Mile between Werribee and Karrijine. The name Wundowing was suggested by the Lands Department, and this was shortened to Wundowi by the Surveyor General.

In 1943 the government decided to commence preliminary work for a blast furnace and wood distillation plant at Wundowie, and to develop a townsite for the workers. Following the survey of lots in 1946 the townsite of Wundowie was gazetted in 1947. Wundowie derives its name from Woondowing Spring, an Aboriginal name for a nearby spring first recorded in 1874. The spelling for the siding was changed according to rules for spelling Aboriginal names adopted by the Lands Department. The meaning of the name is not known, but but it has been suggested it may be derived from Ngwundow, meaning "to lie down".
