THE ARCHITECTURE
The client's brief to David from David Weir Architects was to design a home that had beautiful natural light coming through the home during all parts of the day and plenty of passive cooling for the balmy Perth evenings. A home that did not look and feel like a cookie cutter McMansion but still had plenty of living space to meet all different stages of one's life. The home should allow its occupants to be connected in the space and the ability to have separation when desired. The clients requested David to show restraint in materiality selection, so the architecture, natural light, and airflow be the heroes of the home. They wanted not to just see beauty but to experience and feel the warmth of the sun and the refreshing afternoon breeze.


THE LANDSCAPE
The client's brief to Jem from Jem Hanbury Studios was to design something unique and different to what was currently being designed in Perth gardens. They wanted the garden to feel natural and organic in planting, lush and mature. A feeling where the garden was already established on the land for years before the construction of the home, similarly to what you would see in the English countryside.
A low maintenance garden was crucial as the clients had busy schedules and wanted to spend their down time to relax and experience the space, light and architecture yet not sacrificing on design and beauty for any soiree's to be enjoyed.

THE RESULT : WHAT THE OWNERS SAY
"We could not have asked for a better team to bring our vision of a home that was unique and unreplicable to life. As we wake up, the home is bathed in natural light and morning routines are a joy. Being able to shower with an open window and seeing the blue sky while looking down into the garden is the only way to start your day. As we head downstairs to prepare coffee and breakfast, the views out to the garden with dapple lighting invites us outside to bathe in the morning sun while reading the paper. A serene and calm morning is a much needed moment before the chaos of the workday begins. Coming home from a long day it is just a privilege to head up to the sky deck which faces west to enjoy a glass of wine, an opportunity to wind down and take in the magical yellow, orange, pink and purple sky sunset. This is the space that friends and family enjoy the most.
Having two separated living spaces with each of its own stunning outlook is also unique. When one wants some quiet time to themselves, there is always an available and comfortable option around the home. There's nothing like feeling the breeze as you move around your home, especially on hot days in Perth which isn't an issue because there is strategically designed windows and louvre windows that can open and cool the house down in minutes with the afternoon breeze. This home has been an absolute pleasure to live in. It is light and airy and there are just moments of joy everywhere you turn.
The way David has designed the home, our quality of life has surpassed other older homes we have lived in. You would need four seasons of the year to understand and fully experience the joy of the architecture."
