Elevated Maylands Living in a Restored Character Home

Just moments from Beaufort Street and positioned within one of Maylands' elevated character pockets, this restored 1937 Californian bungalow holds its heritage with quiet confidence. Beyond an ivy wrapped wrought iron and recycled brick fence, the home reveals a private setting where tuckpointed brickwork, a gabled facade and a welcoming verandah establish the charm from the outset.

Original proportions define the front of the home, with accommodation and quieter living spaces evolving beneath high ceilings, polished jarrah floors, picture rails, ornate cornices and ceiling roses. Leadlight detailing and subtle Art Deco influences soften the interiors, giving the home a sense of continuity between eras.

Three well scaled bedrooms are positioned here, each appointed with robes, plantation shutters and ceiling fans. A central lounge anchored by the original fireplace, now fitted with a pot belly stove, also incorporates a built in desk, offering flexibility as a secondary living space, study or home office.

Two bathrooms on the main level have been renovated with a contemporary finish, featuring full height tiling, modern tapware and considered detailing, complemented by a separate powder room.

To the rear, the home opens into a spacious living and dining domain where blackbutt timber floors, expansive glazing and sliding doors draw in natural light and strengthen the connection to the outdoors. The ability to close off the front accommodation wing allows for clear separation when entertaining, while maintaining easy access to a nearby bathroom.

The kitchen is well positioned within this zone, designed for both everyday use and larger gatherings, with marble benchtops, premium appliances and a functional layout that supports seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Sliding glass doors extend the living area onto a fully covered, north east facing deck, creating an elevated entertaining space that overlooks the landscaped grounds below. Tiered, manicured gardens frame the pool, with frameless glass fencing maintaining clear sightlines, while terrazzo surrounds and mosaic tiling introduce a refined, resort inspired finish.

Beneath the home, a substantial activities room adds further flexibility. Incorporating a bathroom and laundry and offering separate side access, this space lends itself to future guest accommodation, a poolside retreat, home office or consulting studio.

At the rear, a powered shed or workshop is accessed via an electric gate from the right of way, providing secure off street parking and additional utility.

Positioned for convenience, the home sits within easy reach of Maylands train station, local schools, parklands and the Beaufort Street precinct, known for its cafés, restaurants and small bars, with the CBD just a short commute away.

Maylands overview

Maylands is a riverside inner-city suburb approximately 4.5 kilometres northeast of Perth, serviced by the Midland railway line on the northern bank of the Swan River. In 1896 the name "Maylands" was first used to identify the area, appearing on a poster advertising a land auction. However the exact reason how the area got its name is something of a mystery.

The suburb was once a source of clay for brick and tile making at Maylands Brickworks, and the pits from these activities are now part of a golf course and residential area. It was home to Perth's main airport until the early 1960s, and the facilities were converted to a training area for the Western Australian Police Service.

Life in Maylands

Maylands is known as a cultural and creative hub as it is home to The West Australian Ballet Centre and home to the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra. In recent years, new bars, cafés and restaurants, along with gourmet food and retail outlets have all contributed to an ongoing transformation of the town centre into a lively, diverse and inclusive destination. There are numerous shopping centres in the area, 15 parks and reserves and two primary schools.
