Real estate agent attacked by dogs at property inspection

"While it was Tony's first incident with a dog in over 38 years in the industry, unfortunately it is a hazard that many agents and property managers face."

A Broome real estate agent was attacked by two dogs this month while performing a property appraisal.

Hutchinson Real Estate Principal, Tony Hutchinson, was asked to visit the property by the owner, and was not told there were dogs on site, nor were there warning signs that dogs were present. The owner was not home at the time of the attack. Tony was left with severe leg injuries and is currently using a wheelchair and crutches.

Fortunately, he had a colleague with him who distracted the dogs, allowing Tony to climb onto the bonnet and then roof of his car to escape them. The colleague created another diversion by driving his car down the property’s driveway, and Tony was able to get into his car and drive back into town.

While it was Tony's first incident with a dog in over 38 years in the industry, unfortunately it is a hazard that many agents and property managers face, and he shares the following advice for homeowners, based on his experience.

“There is an increase in large guard dogs [in Broome] and although your dog may be controllable while you are home, the behaviour can change when you aren’t around,” Tony said.

“If you have an agent, or anyone else, coming to your property while you’re not home, be sure to remove or restrain your dogs, and make them aware there are animals on the premises."

The Shire of Broome are investigating the attack.
