"We spoke to Sam about his leap from the health industry to real estate, his insights on the Mandurah market, and the rewarding feeling of delivering quality customer service to his clients."

Have you ever thought about flipping the script on your career? Trading the familiar for a thrilling unknown?

Sam Beechey made that change 10 months ago, transitioning to a career in real estate. In that short time he has sold over 25 properties and been recognised as one of REIWA’s top performing Rookies over multiple months.

We spoke to Sam about his leap from the health industry to real estate, his insights on the Mandurah market, and the rewarding feeling of delivering quality customer service to his clients.

How did you get involved in real estate?

My background is in health and wellness, working in gyms, health coaching, and sales and marketing for health supplements.

I was looking for a career that offered a more sustainable, long-term career path, while still being able to help people and provide high quality customer service. Now, instead of assisting people with their health, I’m supporting them to manage their largest asset, the family home.

Skills between the two industries are so interchangeable. While the end product is different, the goal is to assist people to get the best outcome possible, whether in health or real estate. It’s all about understanding the client, working out what they’re trying to achieve, and helping them create a pathway to their desired outcome.

How long have you been in the industry and what are you enjoying about it so far?

In March it will be 12 months, and what a year it’s been. I’ve never been busier, especially when we were headed into the Spring selling season, but I’m lucky to have had the support I have, allowing me to grow my experience.

Delivering results, exceeding expectations and receiving great feedback about my selling style from sellers and buyers has been rewarding. I try to do things my own way and bring other business habits from previous roles across to enhance my approach.

My key takeaway has been learning to leave work at the door. While you get it in any industry, you can sometimes take the seller or buyer’s stresses home, and learning to compartmentalise is crucial in managing the demands of the job.

What has your local market been like?

In Mandurah, we’re seeing strong demand for houses in the $450,000 to $650,000 range, and while we may not get as many people through the door at home opens as the metro market, there are consistently between three and 15 offers on every property, as long as it is appropriately priced.

There has been a lot of interstate migration with buyers looking to enjoy the lifestyle Western Australia has to offer. Currently it’s approximately 50/50 between those coming from the Eastern states and local buyers looking to downsize, buy their first home or a change in general.

What is your advice to those thinking of a career in real estate?

Focus on personal development, self-awareness, and become a perpetual learner. Understand that you are bound to make mistakes, it’s how you overcome them that helps you grow. Also, always put the client first. You have to put yourself in their shoes to understand the stresses involved in both buying and selling.

A high-quality mentor can be incredibly beneficial – it doesn’t have to be someone working in this industry. A mentor can help you understand yourself better and thrive in all parts of your life, not just your career.

Finally, set goals for yourself. I’m incredibly competitive, but only with myself. I always strive for self-improvement, watching myself grow each month and continue to evolve.

What’s next?

It's about creating something for my family and ensuring that I’m being congruent with myself, my ethics and beliefs.

I anticipate building a team with great systems in place where I get to have work-life integration – not necessarily balance – to give myself time-freedom to create success for my family and provide a business platform for fellow team members who wish to thrive. All while leaving a legacy in the real estate industry through outstanding client experiences.
