Typically, when looking for a property to rent, location is at the top of everyone’s list of ‘wants’. If you’re thinking of moving to an inner city suburb or setting up house right in the middle of the CBD, here are some pros and cons to consider before taking the plunge.

Close to the action

Living in the city often means you’re closer to the action and have all the amenities you need on your doorstep. Brunch spots, bars and retail hubs are close by, and if you work in the CBD your commute time is significantly reduced.

Being close to the city and popular amenities can sometimes mean a bigger price tag in terms of rent or sale price. Weigh up your living expenses before you make your move; whilst rent might be higher in some locations, being closer to work and amenities could mean you save on transport costs.

Apartment living

Living close to or in the city can mean a smaller living space, particularly when it comes to the backyard. Apartments and townhouses make up the majority of property types in the city, and typically contain a small balcony or courtyard.

In saying this, many new apartment developments are close to parks or incorporate an alfresco area, such as a communal garden or barbeque space, so you can enjoy the outdoors while still living an inner city lifestyle

Want vs need

Before you take the plunge, be sure to consider the facilities you will need in your new home and which ones you don’t.

Many new apartment buildings come with a pool or a gym, which is a perk for some. However, if you don’t intend to use these facilities, consider how they might contribute to your rent.

Be sure to enquire about parking bays when looking into a property as well. Street parking can be scarce in the CBD, so if you have a car ask the property manager about the parking facilities.
