Starting a career in real estate can be as much about timing as it is about passion, and for Jane Evans, it all began after an 18-month adventure around Australia in a Kombi. What started as a sales personal assistant evolved into a long and rewarding career spanning nearly three decades. From receptionist to office manager, and roles across accounts, property management and sales, Jane’s journey highlights the versatility and opportunities the real estate industry offers.
From Kombi travels to real estate success ... you have quite a story?
Jane: My career in real estate started way back in 1993, when I returned to Bunbury after travelling around Australia in a Kombi for 18 months and I needed a job. I was employed as a sales personal assistant, way before PAs were a thing.
I then moved with some of the team to a new agency and started as the receptionist and took on more responsibilities as the company grew, eventually becoming the office manager. After a couple of babies and a divorce – and working at another real estate agency – I then landed at Professionals DAD Realty in Australind.
I have been in accounts/support/office manager/PM/sales for 21 years now.
What are the three things you love about your career?
Jane: I love the changing landscape of real estate. Even after all these years, there is still something new that comes along, almost daily.
I love the people and their stories and hearing why they have moved to our neighbourhood.
I love the negotiations required for win-win situations.
What are your career goals?
Jane: My goal is to be a licensee and use all the skills I have learned, possibly with a long-term view to be a locum licensee in semi-retirement!
Which course did you last do with REIWA Training?
Jane: I completed the Diploma over a year, graduating in December 2024. I really enjoyed the emotional intelligence and team management aspects of the course. I found some units quite challenging but all the trainers and training support staff at REIWA were very supportive and helpful and were very happy to take the extra time to help out with any queries.
What’s next for your professional development?
Jane: I would like to enhance my training in specialist areas such as Commercial and Strata, and of course will continue to fulfill my CPD requirements every year.
What advice would you give someone thinking of a career in real estate?
Jane: Real estate is a great career, with plenty of opportunities across a variety of roles. It can also create a stronger bond with your local community as you help people into their dream home or property and get involved at the local level.
The job is diverse – each day is different. You will never get bored!
