Architectural Exploration: Contemporary

In this edition of REIWA’s Architectural Exploration, we look at key design features of contemporary-style homes and units across Perth.

Architectural Exploration: Contemporary

Contemporary homes are often confused with modern homes, but they aren't the same.

The word “modern” might lead you to believe these properties feature present-day trends but they often incorporate design styles from the early to mid-1900s.

Contemporary homes reflect current popular styles while incorporating modern aesthetics.

Typical features

While the design styles can look different, both typically feature minimalism and clean lines.

Contemporary-style home interior design features can include:

  • Natural light
  • Open floor plans
  • Minimalism
  • Natural elements
  • Texture blends
  • Neutral palettes

Sustainable and eco-friendly materials

While exterior design features can be:

  • Strong, clean lines
  • Large windows
  • Sloped roofs and green architecture
  • Asymmetrical layouts
  • Mixed eco-friendly materials, including concrete, brick, wood, stone and types of metal

Open-plan living

Open-plan living is a standout feature in contemporary architecture, as seen in this Yokine home (below). The spacious living area flows effortlessly into the alfresco dining space through large stackable glass doors.

The centrepiece of this Iluka home (below) is its expansive open-plan living area, featuring polished concrete floors and bathed in natural light for a warm, inviting ambiance. It effortlessly connects to the casual dining area, making it an ideal space for family gatherings or intimate dinners.

This Morley home (pictured below) smartly features an open-plan living and dining area, highlighted by a feature wall with an electronic animated fireplace, creating a cozy and sophisticated feel.

Natural light a must

Natural light and clean lines define this home in Jindalee, featuring spacious, light-filled indoor-outdoor living areas.

The open layout enhanced daily living, with large windows offering stunning views from the open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas to the rear entertaining spaces.

Contemporary-style apartments

Contemporary style is also showcased in Perth apartments, such as this Attadale residence which utilises Japandi style – a blend of Scandinavian simplicity and Japanese tranquility which was the design theme of The Block 2023 winners Steph and Gian.

Sustainable, contemporary living spaces are coupled with minimalist elegance, muted tones and clean lines.

And for those with a healthy budget, this apartment on Mounts Bay Road in Perth (pictured below) is contemporary architecture at its finest.

The front door welcomes you into the sweeping main living space, with polished floorboards, generous proportions and an open-plan design that promotes an easy flow between the kitchen, living, dining and entertaining spaces.
