From managing three roles in a small office to owning her own agency, Denise D’Agnone’s journey in real estate reflects her relentless commitment to her community and her craft.

Denise has been involved in the Armadale and Byford property market for 43 years, and giving back to the community is a pillar of her business model. Her agency is a proud sponsor of the REIWA Community REInvest program and takes part in important initiatives including the annual Sleeping Bag Appeal.

We spoke to Denise about her team’s involvement in this year’s Sleeping Bag Appeal, her other community initiatives, and her advice for emerging real estate professionals.

How did you get involved in real estate?

I jumped straight in at the deep end with both feet and absolutely loved it. I started in a reception role, which then evolved into helping with settlements and property management as I attained my sales and settlement licences.

I was in a small office, so managing the three areas was something I did to gain as much experience as possible, and I enjoyed the challenge. Getting licensed then allowed me to open my own agency when the time was right.

What do you love about a career in real estate?

Especially in the early days when I was raising my family, I loved the flexibility the role offered. I could pick my children up from school, help out with excursions or attend assemblies. These days, it gives me the opportunity to get involved in the Byford community.

How long has your agency been involved in the Community REInvest program?

We’ve been a supporter of the Community REInvest program since 2021, although my own support for the Salvation Army dates back 26 years. I learned about the work REIWA was doing with The Salvation Army at an industry event and welcomed the prospect of getting further involved.

This year my agency is taking part in the Sleeping Bag Appeal for the second year, and we look forward to seeing the response from the community in the remaining weeks of the campaign. Our office has so far contributed over 20 sleeping bags on top of the public collection.

What initiatives do you take part in outside of Community REInvest?

I have been involved in Rotary for almost 30 years. As part of that, we host a bingo night each Friday and many people tell us it’s their only outing for the week because it is a safe environment. It makes you realise how important it is to engage in your local community.

My agency also sponsors two children in Bali, providing financial support and gifts through a local contact. Whether it’s the essentials such as glasses or a Christmas present, it’s nice to see the contribution go to a good cause.

What has the Byford market looked like over the past 12 months?

It's been very strong and buoyant, with many investors from the east coast. Approximately 50 per cent of the sales we’re seeing are to Eastern States investors, which is unusual for this area.

Investors are looking at the rail extension and growing infrastructure, seeing how it will bring Byford closer to the city. Our real estate is relatively affordable, you can still buy on larger blocks and rents remain strong.

For renters, there tend to be longer-term tenancy options which offers stability for families wanting to settle down in the area. The community is strong and people are drawn to the area's environmental appeal and chances to get involved.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of a career in real estate?

My top advice is to use your initiative. Get involved with a local real estate agency, do your registration course at REIWA Training where you get the best start on your career and can build relationships with senior industry experts as well as other students.

Goal setting is also important – think about where you want to be in two, five and 10 years. Share those goals with a mentor, many people in the industry are happy to talk and help newcomers.

Think about a work experience opportunity – my agency and many others take students and show them the ropes, and it can be a gateway to a career they may not have thought about.

Professionals Byford Property Team is one of 28 designated collection points taking part in this year’s Sleeping Bag Appeal. To donate, bring a sleeping bag to one of the collection points before Wednesday 26 June, or you can donate directly to the Red Shield Appeal.
