Room to Move!

This once loved character home is in need of new owners to restore it to its former glory!

Originally build around the birth of the town in mid 1960’s this 3 x 1 Kununurra cottage sits central on a huge 1109 sqm block and is one of the lucky ones blessed with solid timber floorboards throughout.

There are many examples throughout the town of these having been lovingly restored, renovated and/or extended, breathing new life into these charming Kimberley character homes. It has had a roof replacement in recent years, but is otherwise original. Securely fenced and gated, the property also benefits from a large double lock-up garage/workshop with an internal hobby room / studio within and also has a bore which is a valuable addition.

The location is also a plus being centrally located within walking distance to all town centre amenities.

The 1109 sqm block is zoned R30 meaning it can be re-developed as a duplex or potentially even a triplex or multi-dwelling site - subject to approval by local council so interested buyers should make their own enquiries.

Kununurra overview

The townsite of Kununurra is located in the Kimberley region in the extreme northeast of the state, 3214 kilometres from Perth. When the Ord River Irrigation scheme was being planned in the 1950s a townsite was included in the proposed development. Amongst other submissions of Aboriginal names put forward for the new townsite being created in the vicinity of the Ord River Dam was "Cununurra", said to mean "black soil" and to be the Aboriginal name for the Ord River according to Mary Durack. A Mr. Lewis of the Public Works Department reported that a soil survey undertaken in 1954 had disclosed that 99 per cent of the land to be irrigated from the dam was composed of "cununurra clay". This name was not favoured by the Postmaster-General's Department because of its similarity to place names in Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. However, to compromise, that department suggested adopting the spelling, "Kununurra", this version being approved in March 1960. The townsite was gazetted in 1961.
