In 1944 the West Australian newspaper reported -
Mr and Mrs J. Shields, of 195 Washington Street, Victoria Park, have much pleasure in announcing the engagement of their daughter, Janet (Nettie), to Firl Rowen Maurer, MO, MM 1/C, USN, eldest son of Mr and Mrs D. D. Maurer, of Alamo, California, USA.

Nettie met her husband to be, Firl, a US Navy sailor, while he was stationed in Perth.
After two years of courtship and the proposal of marriage accepted, Firl's ship was repositioned and they had to part.
Three long years passed, WWII ended and they were reunited in the San Francisco bay area.
In 1947, they were pronounced husband and wife in Reno, Nevada.
Their marriage lasted three months shy of fifty years with Firl passing in 1997.
Nettie lived till 92 and died in Fortuna California.
A life that started at 195 Washington Street!
