Restorers Seventies Revival

Sunsets from the balcony at 10 Ford Road are what escarpment living dreams are made of – sweeping views over Perth CBD, light sparking off the glittering Indian Ocean and a soft breeze caressing the treetops. This grand dame was a sensation in her time, designed by architect Robert Woods and built by John Shenstone, coming runner up for Home of the Year in 1978. While time has been a cruel mistress in some respects, for the buyer looking to put in the time and effort required, this home would shine when returned to her former glory.

The floorplan of the house is well thought out with thoughtful family zoning and inspired use of the sloping escarpment block. In particular, using the thermodynamics of the hillside granite to create a cool storage room off the undercroft garage and an incredible wine cellar with floor-to-ceiling Jarrah wine racks and funky “cave” style ceiling. Split over three levels with a winding staircase, the flashy architectural style of the seventies is present in all its glory. The bedrooms are cleverly separated by a large gallery style dining/living room to create a harmonious home. The main bedroom has full built-in Jarrah robes as well as an ensuite plus its own separate balcony overlooking the twinkling lights of the airport. The three minor bedrooms also boast built-in-robes and two feature their own balcony with views over Perth. A large family bathroom with separate toilet is in the same wing as the minor bedrooms. The kitchen is galley style with all Jarrah cabinetry and informal dining nook. Off to the side of the kitchen is a good-sized family room with potbelly, perfect for cool winter evenings on the couch and in modern times most likely where the TV will reside!

A games room featuring a built-in wet bar, full bathroom with original whimsical wallpaper and entry to the wine cellar is perfectly placed with exit through sliding doors to the pool terrace. The below ground concrete pool needs major TLC, however, the payoff would be fabulous pool parties with views over twinkling CBD lights. While many homes along Ford Road struggle with parking, this house has both a double garage undercroft with electronic roller doors as well as double carport at the rear of the house, with flat entry to the kitchen.

If you’re looking for your very own Grand Designs restoration, this home is the perfect place for you. With some imagination, time and elbow grease this seventies gem could be restored to her former glory and provide a fantastic family home for those who crave something different.

Lesmurdie overview

Like Kalamunda, the development of the "Lesmurdie" area is closely tied to the exploitation of the Jarrah forest in the region by the Canning Jarrah Timber Company Ltd. In 1897, Mr Archibald Sanderson, a Perth journalist commenced the acquisition of a number of these properties, with a view to building up a "rural retreat" and he named his property "Lesmurdie". Lesmurdie Cottage was a shooting-box in Banffshire, Scotland, near Dufftown and was let to Mr Sanderson's father for shooting. It was in memory of this cottage that Sanderson applied the name to his property.

Life in Lesmurdie

The suburb has two shopping centres in the area including Lesmurdie Village on Sanderson Road and the Lesmurdie Road Shopping Centre on the corner of Rooth Rd and Lesmurdie Rd.
