• National Homelessness Week

This week is National Homelessness Week, highlighting that homelessness remains a problem and there is much to be done to help those who don't have safe haven to go home to at night.

The Salvation Army estimate that over 9,000 West Australians experience homelessness each night, and it’s expected that this number will increase due to the impacts of the COVID-19, which is why National Homelessness Week is even more important this year.

The Institute and our members our proud to partner with the Salvos as part of our Community REInvest initiative, which provides support so that they can continue their vital work, particularly in response to homelessness.

Ending homelessness - recovery post COVID-19

On Monday 3 August, REIWA Advocacy and Policy Manager Sadie Davidson was a panelist at an event organised by Shelter WA in partnership with the WA Alliance to End Homelessness to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on homelessness.

In summary, Sadie touched on the following points:

    • Collaboration is key to tackling the issue. Playing parties against each other will not work and we need to come together to abolish landlord and tenant stereotypes.
    • During COVID-19, the private rental market has been relatively unscathed with only one per cent of tenancies due to be terminated at the end of the emergency period.
However, money set aside for the rent relief scheme, ($30 million) of which only $2.5 million has been claimed, the remainder should be used to repay the debts accrued by tenants so tenancies can continue and making it easier to find new housing by not carrying debt.

What can you do to help?

For as little as $20 a month you can become a Community REInvest sponsor and help The Salvation Army in their fight against homelessness.
