  • REIWA encourages WA public to dig deep and help the homeless this winter

    New

REIWA and its agents are getting behind The Salvation Army’s annual Sleeping Bag Appeal and encouraging West Australians to donate to the cause.

The Sleeping Bag Appeal is part of the Salvos’ Winter Appeal to help the homeless in WA by collecting warm sleeping bags and blankets to distribute to those in need.

REIWA President Hayden Groves said the cold winter months in Perth were especially difficult for homeless people in WA, and the donation of warm sleeping bags and blankets could make a big difference to their comfort levels.

”We’ve seen time and time again how generous West Australians are, and I encourage everyone who is in a position to help to donate a sleeping bag or blanket to this worthy cause,” Mr Groves said.

Salvos' Economic, Social & Impact Survey

The Salvation Army recently released the findings of their annual Economic, Social & Impact Survey (ESIS), which highlighted WA had the highest proportion of citizens suffering some degree of housing stress out of any state in the country.

Salvation Army Spokesman Warren Palmer said due to such a large portion of income required to simply secure a safe house, many West Aussies were left with on average $17 a day for all other basic essentials of life such as food, clothes, medical and school expenses.

“It is no surprise that 69 per cent of respondents indicated they could not afford enough food, 50 per cent said they had regularly gone without meals and 30 per cent missed a substantial meal every day,” Mr Palmer said.

Mr Groves said the results of the national ESIS report were concerning and more needed to be done to help the homeless in WA and ensure everyone had access to safe, accessible and affordable housing options.

“Government and the private sector need to work collaboratively to address housing affordability in our state. Housing stress is a key contributor to homelessness and we cannot simply rely on Government and benevolent groups such as the Salvation Army to solve the problem,” Mr Groves said.

How can you help WA's homeless this winter?

West Aussies wishing to be part of the real estate industry’s support of the homeless can contribute new or freshly laundered sleeping bags or blankets to the appeal.

To donate, simply drop these items off at REIWA or at one of the designated REIWA agency collection points.

“This year we hope to be swamped with donations. I encourage everyone to participate so we can help the Salvos provide much needed warmth for those in Perth sleeping rough on our streets,” Mr Groves said.
