Iwanoff House

A place of true historic value, Iwanoff House was both the family home and the architectural studio of the renowned architect, Iwan Iwanoff.

Constructed in 1966, Iwanoff House is a beautiful statement of mid century architecture and a classic example of Iwanoff's unique use of concrete besser blocks and sympathetic response to nature.

Born in Bulgaria, Iwan Iwanoff (1919-1986), a fine artist, studied architecture in Europe before immigrating to Australia in 1950. Having worked with architecture firm Krantz and Sheldon and Yuncken Freeman Architects in Melbourne, Iwanoff went on to establish his own architecture practice in 1963, The Studio of Iwanoff, located right here at 16 Lifford Road. With a legacy unlike any other, Iwan Iwanoff continues to be celebrated for his enduring contribution to Australian architecture.

The Iwanoff family home was an introduction to the use of concrete besser block design and construction instead of traditional cavity brickwork, which resulted in his distinctive brutalist style that followed through to the early eighties.

16 Lifford’s rectangular form and upper level overhang evokes a Corbusian podium with
continuous strip windows and external horizontal blockwork vents - a sympathetic response to the Western Australian climate and landscape. Sculptural panels are incorporated into the facade and a custom concrete letterbox, an Iwanoff flourish, completes the picture.

Internally the light-filled rooms flow effortlessly with changes in levels and implied space without solid wall divisions in parts, allowing a sense of connection within the home and the environment outside. Harmonious and calming, one feels as though they are set amongst the trees. Custom Iwanoff timber cabinetry throughout enhances the experience.

Anchored by a central staircase, Iwanoff House provides a second living area (Iwanoff’s studio) and a main bedroom on the ground floor, with the kitchen, living area and two bedrooms located on the upper level.

A balcony looking to the North overlooks the expansive rear garden and provides an external extension of the upper level floor.

Surrounded by established flora and a concrete terrace which extends out at the rear, the external environment allows for significant entertaining and is a wonderful space for children to play.
