The House The Builder Built
‘Let’s go up on the Hill.’
For more than thirty years, those words meant the same thing to one Northam family. Put the day down, walk to the top of the block and enjoy the view. Out came the bonfire and damper and the yarns went around until some problem or other had been solved. The grandkids built cubby houses up there, each one more elaborate than the last.
It all began in 1989, when Mr Dietrich bought this elevated 5,218m² block on the edge of Northam with a plan in mind. He wanted a home where his mother and his own family could live side by side and a place that could one day become everyone's forever home.
It worked better than he could have hoped. Ten grandchildren spent their school holidays here with the run of the place. Christmas, Easter and most birthdays were celebrated here, year after year.
The house was built to last by the people who knew how. Family tradesmen from Dietrich Bros, the Northam building company Mr Dietrich started in 1965, helped bring his vision to life. The company went on to build schools, hospitals, council buildings and public works across the Wheatbelt and that history is part of what makes this home so special.
Now the Hill and the home below it, is looking for its next family.
12 Purkiss Drive is a double brick and iron, with four bedrooms across two connected
residences.
The main home has three bedrooms, two with built in robes, and the third with a walk in. At the front, the lounge room's beautiful bay windows fill the space with natural light and frame the outlook beyond. The kitchen and dining area look out over the rear gardens, while the main bathroom and separate toilet sit conveniently off the hallway. There's even a shower and toilet in the laundry, handy for coming in from the shed or after a hard day's work.
Then there's the separate one bedroom residence, originally designed with Oma in mind. Complete with its own kitchen, living room, bedroom with walk in robe, bathroom, private entrance and dedicated hot water system, it offers a little independence while keeping everyone close. An internal connecting door links the two, making it easy to bring the family together when you want to.
For grandparents, extended family, teenagers wanting their own space or guests who stay a little longer, the possibilities are there. With two separate hot water systems, both residences have been set up to function as their own spaces while remaining connected.
Outside, the bitumen driveway leads to a large powered garage with concrete flooring, alongside a lockable powered workshop. Fruit trees are scattered throughout the grounds, with lawns front and back, a paved patio for outdoor living and security screens fitted to every door and window.
But the real magic of this property might just be up the Hill.
It's a place to watch Northam's hot air balloons drift across the sky at sunrise, see the countryside change with the seasons, come together and let the conversation carry on long after the sun has gone down. It's where the kids can disappear off on an adventure, where generations can come together and where the simplest moments often become the
ones remembered for years.
Approximately thirty seven years of family life, celebrations, adventures and stories have made this property what it is today. Now, it's time for another family to make it their own.
Come and see what the next chapter of 12 Purkiss Drive could look like for you.
