They say change is as good as a holiday. But moving house is a change that can sometimes bring a lot of stress, especially with the anticipation of packing, coordinating removalists (or family and friend helpers) and cleaning up.

Here are four handy tips to reduce stress levels and help make your move the exciting time it should be.

1. Consult a real estate agent

Before you start your move, it's good practice to speak to your REIWA agent to ensure your new place is ready, keys have been exchanged and all necessary paperwork has been finalised. That way you will have the exact dates to book in cleaners and removalists if needed, for utilities to be switched on and you can smoothly transition into your new home without any awkward moments.

2. Give yourself enough time

Rather than trying to pack, move and unpack in one day, consider spreading your move over a few days or a weekend.

If you can, start packing a box or two over the course of a week to ensure your household items are ready to transport (especially if you have hired removalists). This will also cut down your moving time and perhaps avoid you having to take time off work.

Be sure you don't pack important items too early in the week however, such as toiletries or cutlery, to save you having to rifle through neatly packed boxes.

3. Pack like you're going on holiday

It might not seem as exciting as a holiday, but before you move pack a weekend bag with some clothing options, toiletries, medication and snacks. That way you'll have everything you need once you're in your new home, without having to unpack straight away when the exhaustion kicks in.

4. Share the load

Perhaps your car space is limited or you have no car at all - enlist your friends and family well in advance to help you move.

Alternatively, you can hire a removalist to cart your boxes to your new place, however be sure to pack ahead and have a plan to avoid multiple round trips and save you from added costs.
