If you're building or even renovating, this is the perfect time to consider solar so you can plan your home in a way that maximises the benefits of solar.

This handy guide will help you understand what questions you need to be asking your builder or architect.

We recommend you start the conversations in the early stages of planning to explore if your block, position of your home and design will be suitable.

1. Roof position

One of the most important things to consider first is to include a north facing aspect or roof in your designs. As a general rule in sunny WA, your solar panels will generate the most energy throughout the year if they are facing north. The second best option is west but also consider any obstructions or shading that may come between the sun and your panels during the day.

2. Try to avoid obstructions or shading

Try to place any chimneys, pipes or vents as far away as possible from the panels - ideally on a different aspect of the roof (if pitched). Think about any trees or other structures, including surrounding properties that could cast some shade on your panels. Solar panels work best when they have uninterrupted access to the sun between 10am and 2pm.

3. Plan for solar wiring

Even if you don't plan on installing solar straight away, it's worth considering laying the electrical foundations for solar upfront so it's easier to get connected at a later stage. This includes installing a bi-directional meter so you only need your meter reprogrammed instead of replaced or upgraded when the time has arrived to go solar.

4. Ensure your roof can handle a heavier load

Generally a roof built to Australian regulations should be sufficient to carry the extra load of your panels, but it makes sense to think about from the get go to help ensure your roof and the materials used can easily cater for your planned size.

Bonus tip: Did you know Perth has around 300 days of sunshine? To make the most of your solar PV, use the majority of your energy between the hours of 10am and 2pm when the sun is shining brightest!

According to Synergy, the average household could save up to $500 on electricity with solar. To find out how much you could be saving, check out Synergy's SolarReturn calculator.
